How to Find Flatmates For Your 2nd Year of University

So how do you find the best flatmates for your second year at uni?

If you’ve already made some good friends, then grouping together to find accommodation is an obvious place to start. There might also be people you get on well with on your course. Living with people you know, like and trust is a brilliant way to make a home from home because you’ll share all your highs and lows together. 

But be cautious. Sometimes living with friends can change the dynamics if one of you doesn’t pull your weight with chores or who won’t contribute to household expenses. The best thing to do is to chat it through and establish a few ground rules before you commit to anything.

2. Use Social Media

Online platforms are a great way to find potential flatmates. Facebook even has groups that are dedicated to helping students find accommodation so post here or use hashtags related to your uni on Twitter or Instagram. 

Just make sure that you meet any potential flatmates in person and get to know them before you commit. You might also ask for references from a previous landlord. Above all, trust your instincts. If anything feels off, then look elsewhere. 

3. Look Online

There are lots of websites dedicated to helping students find accommodation, including SpareRoom and Gumtree. It makes sense to find flatmates by looking in the same places as others in a similar situation. 

Create your own profile and browse the listings or make your own listing and let others come to you. 

4. Attend Events

At the start of the year, keep an eye out for freshers fairs or student housing fairs. You may well find local letting agents who can give you advice and introduce you to potential flatmates.  

You might also see notes or adverts in local shop windows in areas with plenty of student accommodation. Just picking up the phone can help you to find what you’re looking for.
