Embarking on an all-night study session is a hallmark of the student experience. During exam season occasional late-night study sessions can be unavoidable, so we have rounded up 7 ways to get through them.
Here’s how to navigate an all-nighter like a pro:
1. Find the Right Study Space: Make use of the University of Lincoln’s 24-Hour Libraries, The Main Library is open round-the-clock during exam season and the Ross library is open for 24 hours a day Monday – Friday. The big benefit of studying here is that staff are there to check on your wellbeing, so if you do fall asleep, someone will wake you up and make sure that you get back to your student accommodation and safely to bed!
2. Prioritise Essential Information : The night before an exam, when faced with limited time, focus on key concepts and crucial information. Avoid the temptation to cram every detail and instead, use your time wisely.
3. Opt for Water: Coffee, Red Bull, Monster, Pro Plus tablets… caffeine might seem tempting because it will offer a temporary boost. However, excessive caffeine can make you jittery and lead to crashes. The best way to stay alert and focused is to hydrate with water throughout the night.
4. Choose Nutrient-Rich Snacks: Sugar is another late night enemy! Fuel your study session with snacks that provide sustained energy, such as nuts, fruits, and raw vegetables with dips. Steer clear of sugary treats that can lead to energy crashes (here’s to looking at you donuts).
5. Create a Productive Home Environment: If the library isn’t your scene, use the dedicated study space in your student room to minimise distractions and maximise productivity. Warning, avoid studying in bed or on a couch, being too comfortable can cause sleep!
6. Establish a Structured Schedule: Map out a detailed plan for the night, including dedicated study blocks and regular breaks. Whilst it can be difficult, when you can adhere to your schedule to stay on track and this way you’ll avoid feeling overwhelmed by last-minute cramming.
7. Squeeze in Some Shut-Eye: While it may seem counterintuitive, prioritise rest when possible. Even a short 10 minute nap can help rejuvenate your mind and improve overall alertness during exams.
