Looking After Your Mental Health at University
As a university student, you are often juggling academic, social, and personal demands, which can take a toll on your mental health.
It’s essential to prioritise your well-being to ensure you can handle the stresses of university life. Here are some tips to help you look after your mental health as a university student:
- Build a routine. University life can be unpredictable, but building a routine can help create stability and structure. This includes setting aside time for studying, socialising, and self-care.
- Stay active. Regular physical activity can help boost your mood, reduce stress, and improve overall mental health. Even a short walk or quick exercise session can make a big difference.
- Connect with others. It’s important to maintain social connections, even if it’s virtual. Reach out to friends and family, join clubs or organisations that interest you, and attend social events on campus.
- Seek support. If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t hesitate to seek support. Most universities offer counselling services, and there are also online resources available. It’s important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
- Practice self-care. Take time to care for yourself, whether that’s through meditation, taking a hot bath, reading a book, or doing something else that relaxes you. Prioritising self-care can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
- Manage your workload. University coursework can be overwhelming, but managing your workload can help reduce stress. Break assignments down into manageable tasks, prioritise deadlines, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
- Get enough sleep. Adequate sleep is essential for good mental health. Try to maintain a regular sleep routine and aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
- Eat well. A healthy diet can help improve your mood and energy levels. Try to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
