Top Five Free Things to Do in Coventry for Students

Being a student can be financially challenging. But there are plenty of free things to do in Coventry, including exciting and budget-friendly activities that will help you explore the city. Here, we’ve put together five enticing places to visit that won’t leave a hole in your pocket. Consider this an invitation to make memories and have fun.

Visit Coventry Cathedral

The ruins of Coventry Cathedral are world-renowned and a must-visit site for tourists and students. The Cathedral features a stunning mediaeval design and a past stretching back over 1,000 years – perfect for budding history and architecture students. Wander through and view the last ruins of the monastic building of the Cathedral which survived between 1102 – 1539 before being renovated to a gothic style that lasted until it was bombed during the Second World War. The remains of the bombed site stand as a symbol of wartime destruction but also as a sign of peace and reconciliation. The new Cathedral building has been built opposite the ruins and provides a peaceful atmosphere. This site is free to the public and offers a tranquil atmosphere outside of the city’s hustle and bustle.

Explore War Memorial Park

War Memorial Park is an ideal location for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. With free entrance, here you’ll find a range of sporting facilities and open fields ideal for hanging out with friends or stretching your legs after a long assignment or project. When the university year comes to an end in those late Spring and early Summer months, this park becomes the perfect free meet-up spot to say goodbye to your friends before heading off home.

The park is a lovely place to take a stroll, no matter what time of the year. Breathe in fresh air, and relax to the sound of the world around you.

Discover Herbert Art Gallery and Museum

For those history and art lovers, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum boast an impressive collection, including Ancient Egyptian artefacts and natural history records to modern cultural heritage presentations. The gallery and museum offers free entrance and guided tours to the public. Even Dippy the Diplodocus has made visits to this prestigious museum before. The museum also offers outstanding exhibits and events for free – it’s a place to really enhance your intellect.

Visit Fargo Village

Fargo Village is a creative and unique destination offering something for everyone. The village is filled with independent shops, creative studios, and cafes, providing a fun and vibrant environment for visitors. From vegan markets to peace forums, cheese festivals to vintage home shows. Fargo Village partners closely with Coventry University so head on down to support your fellow students. Admission to Fargo Village is free and you’ll find there’s an event or some other happening almost every weekend.

Stroll Along the Canal Basin

The Coventry Canal Basin provides a great opportunity to explore a different side of the city and to make the most of a free adventure. Along the canal, you can sometimes find a floating market lined with lots of bunting and traders selling trinkets. Follow the paths along the canal and watch the boats going through the locks, admire the wildlife and explore the nearby cobbled streets and numerous restaurants, cafes and bars.

Finding free things to do isn’t always easy, but Coventry has got plenty to offer. Whether you love history, nature, culture, or just want to explore something new, Coventry has got you covered. Discover everything this beautiful city has to offer and gain exciting new memories that you can share with friends.
